Karl Weixlmann was awarded the PSA Angler award for 2018 at the Fall Run Banquet.
Karl was among the earliest members of the PA Steelhead Association. Over the years he has served as a Board Member and as President of our Board of Directors. He is dedicated to serving the Mission of the PA Steelhead Association and is one of those members who can always be counted on to ‘be there’ when work needs to be done, whether it is a fund-raising hot dog sale at the mouth of Walnut Creek, a stream improvement project, or providing knowledgeable input to the Legislature or the Fish Commission on topics important to the Steelhead Fishery. He caught his first Steelhead on Four Mile Creek in 1983, some 35 years ago. Since then he has been known as an innovator in Steelhead Alley. His Little Precious fly pattern has worked wonders for years on our local streams. He is also very well known for perfecting techniques for fishing Steelhead from the beach and for the effectiveness of dry-dropper fishing for Steelhead in low and clear conditions. Our Angler Award winner is not only innovative; he is also eager to share what he discovers about Steelhead Fishing with his fellow fishermen. He is a frequent presenter at PA Steelhead Association meetings and other fishing forums. He is also an accomplished author. His 2009 book, “Great Lakes Steelhead, Salmon & Trout: Essential Techniques for Fly Fishing the Tributaries” has become the seminal book on Great Lakes Steelhead fishing. He was a significant contributor to “Keystone Fly Fishing: The Ultimate Guide to Pennsylvania’s Best Water”. And he has had numerous articles published in well-known periodicals such as Fly Fisherman magazine. Our Angler Award winner is both a very dedicated family man and is passionate about our sport. He supports his family entirely from guiding all along the south shore of Lake Erie. He has become one of the strongest advocates for public access and has been instrumental in helping organizations such as the Fish and Boat Commission and the Western PA Conservancy to identify important land for public fishing access.
